What is it?

Any person who wants to possess, operate or purchase a firearm or ammunition in Canada must take the basic non-restricted course.  If you wish or acquire a semiautomatic centerfire long gun or a pistol of legal size, completion of the restricted course is required before applying for a firearms license.

Why should I take it?

If you travel to Southeast Alaska or the Lower 48  to hunt or target shoot, and wish to carry a firearm (especially a restricted firearm), through Canada, the Canadian Firearms Possession and Acquisition License (PAL) can make it easier to do so.  To get the PAL, you must pass these courses.

What will it do for me?

The PAL will allow you to cross the border into Canada with most rifles and shotguns without paying the $25 fee.  It will allow you to carry a semi-automatic rifle (AR-15, etc.) or other restricted firearms (pistols with barrel length over 4 1/8 inches) across the border and to and from Southeast Alaska and the Lower 48.

How long are the classes?

Classes are each 8-10 hours long and include basic firearm safety and handling, ammunition, transportation and storage rules, etc.  They include written and practical exams.  The restricted course deals with restricted firearms safety, etc. and Canadian rules and regulations.

How much does it cost?  Where can I take the training?

The courses cost $75 each, and proceeds go to ADF&G Hunter Education Program.  The PAL is $60CAD for non-restricted, or $80CAD for both.  The PAL is good for 5 years, and can be renewed online.  Classes are available in Anchorage, or anywhere on the road system if 6 or more students sign up.
